Being A Traveler When You Traveler

Posted on 01.15.13

Belarus The key to making the most of your vacation is to embrace the destination and all its unique and special features and destinations. To often we find ourselves roped into become a tourist, visiting only sights which cater to us as tourist, so much so that we miss the trip altogether. For this reason, it is imperative that we learn how to actually embrace the society and all that makes it special to begin with. Become a successful traveler and make the most of your trip with the following tips to help you.

Dress the part – Rather than bringing your clothes that make you stand out, do the best you can to blend in. While this doesn’t mean you need to go full out with what you wear and dress only in the traditional garb of an area, as American’s we dress much differently then the rest of the world. Dress less like a tourist by dressing less like a typical American. Avoid shorts and t shirts with logos on them. Skip the baseball cap and tennis shoes.

Research an area before you go – Really get to know and area and what to expect when you arrive. Get to know a little about the culture, the language and even how to get around.

When you travel, remember you represent where you are from. Don’t act like a fool when you travel. Be respectful of an area, its people and its culture.

Embrace the area and its food – Why eat what you are used to when you travel? Just because a country on the other side of the globe has a McD’s doesn’t mean mean its the place to go. Try a local hotspot, embrace the cuisine in all its glory.

Do your best to honor the people and their culture by not expecting them to speak your language and instead speaking theirs. Most people will try hard to understand you and help you as you show them that you care enough about them as a people to do your best to converse with them in their language rather than simply expecting them to understand English.

The best part of traveling to foreign countries and far off lands is not just getting away from home but is also in experiencing the world in a different way and from a different perspective. Embrace the difference of the world and become a traveler when you travel.
