The Best of the California Beaches

Posted on 03.15.16

California is known for its awesome beaches, beautiful sand, and plentiful surfing.

There are so many locations to visit that narrowing it down to the best spot is not always easy. However, there are a couple of beaches that stand out because they have special significance in the surf world.

Santa Cruz

The Best of California BeachesWhen you think “beach town,” Santa Cruz, California should be one of the first cities that comes to mind. Not only is it the historically significant to the surf community, in that it was the first place on the mainland that people learned of surfing, it is also home to the legendary Beach Boardwalk. With at least 29 beaches, this sun-soaked city is the perfect place for seaside fun. If you enjoy surfing, hiking, volleyball, playing in the sand, or awesome locations for family fun, you will find it in Santa Cruz. If beaches are not your cup of tea, head on over to the nearby redwood forest or check out the latest restaurant offerings.

One of the best things about Santa Cruz is that it offers year-round events and happenings and many of them are free. Upcoming events include Hummingbird Days, “Beethoven and the Beatles,” presented by the Santa Cruz County Symphony, and Wine & Watercolor painting at one of the local wineries.

If you are looking for a laid back, chill spot for a vacation or a weekend getaway, check out santacruz.org to explore all that the city has to offer.

Huntington Beach

Known as Surf City, USA, Huntington is an awesome stop for families and individuals looking to “ride a wave,” on their annual vacation. The beach has been known as a surfing hot-spot since 1914 when Hawaiian surfer, George Freeth, was invited to showcase his skills during the grand opening of the pier. 6

The beach can be a little crazy in late July and early August each year when it plays host to the US Open of Surfing. That being said, it is a great time to bring to the kids out to watch some of the world’s best surfers ride the waves. If the kids like what they see, there are several surf school and camps available to teach them how to ride the waves.

In addition to being awesome surf spots, these cities have a great selection of restaurants, museums, shops and other tourist spots to explore. Take the time to hit the waves and experience all that they have to offer.
