Bill Bailey of Litchfield, Illinois Reviews America's Most Chill CitiesJust breathe.

Close your eyes, take a deep breath and slowly blow it out. Imagine yourself on the beach with a cool drink in your hand as you soak in the sun. Perhaps you see yourself sitting on a front porch swing that rocks to a gentle breeze while all the stressors of the world melt away. Here are a few U.S. vacation spots that can help you achieve that feeling of peace.

Austin, Texas

This city is known for its laidback lifestyle, its music scene, some of the best BBQ in the world, one of the hippest international conferences (SXSW), and access to some of the best hike and bike trails right in the middle of the city. The city takes its craft breweries and food trucks somewhat seriously, whilst still kicking back to enjoy both (usually while listening to some awesome live music). The locals are warm, inviting folk who are happy to help you find the best tourist spots and the overall vibes of the city are pretty low-key. It is an ideal spot for a couple’s getaway or to just spend some time on your own discovering a new city.

San Diego, California

Great weather, nice beaches, pleasant locals, outstanding local food, and roughly 350 days a year a temperate, gentle ocean breeze provides all of the air conditioning a person could ever need. The sun, sand, and surf work rather quickly at eroding any stress that you might be carrying. Add to that the slow pace of the city, the palm trees, and the smell of salt water and sound of the nearby ocean. Now, pack your bag and book a ticket to this Coastal paradise.

Portland, Oregon

Coffee, bikes, phenomenal local music, craft beer, Mount Hood as a backdrop, a ton of lakes and hiking trails nearby and lots of flannel—what else could a person ask for? Known for its quirkiness, this city has all of the perks needed to have a good life. The seasons are mild, nature surrounds you, politics are not necessarily a heated debate in town, and just about anything you need is within walking or biking distance within the city.

Kick back, relax and learn from the locals how to let go in one of these laidback locations. You will be glad that you did.
