World Heritage sites are allowed protection and preservation by the UNESCO World Heritage Community in order to ensure that that will be here to offer the same wonderful opportunities for generations to come.
How Did UNESCO Begin
UNESCO began over 50 years ago in response to a project that was scheduled to take place in Egypt. It was slated to flood an area which offered significance to the world today for its historical treasures located there. A campaign was launched to protect the area and UNESCO was born. Several other sites over the next few years were protected from destruction leading UNESCO to become the guardian for sites of cultural importance around the globe. Today, dozens of sites of cultural importance are added each year.
