Save the wrapping for later – Gifts cannot go through security while wrapped due to stricter rules on flights. As such, if you are planning on bringing the gifts, remember to leave them unwrapped and plan on wrapping when you arrive at your destination. If your gifts are wrapped, you can be sure you will be re wrapping when you arrive anyway, so save yourself the hassle.
Pay attention to weight and size restrictions – This is good advice year round. Most airlines have their own specific regulations on size and weight for your luggage. Spend some time before you leave getting to know what restrictions you have on luggage. How many carry-ons are allowed, how much your bag can weigh before it is considered oversize. This tip can save you hundreds in unexpected fees, so plan ahead.
Leave early – If you are traveling with kids this is especially important as you have to plan for unexpected bathroom breaks and snacks when necessary. Travel is up this year according to the airlines and as such you can expect some delays. In addition, as the weather can be unpredictable in winter, pay attention to delays and interruptions in flights when you are traveling by air. If you plan on driving in unfamiliar territory, be sure you have planned for this as well. Many people are not familiar with winter driving and don’t plan ahead for bad roads etc. Check the weather at your destination to ensure you know what to expect when you arrive.
Bring things for the kids to do – Children are already impatient when it comes to the holiday season. As adults we often forget that time doesn’t fly by for the kids like it does for us, as such, plan for the boredom during travel that is certain to ensue. Handheld games, toys and books and other toys may help make your vacation go a bit more simple. Keep your child amused while you travel and ensure that you will not have to be struggling with an unhappy child while traveling.
