Swallow Falls State Park
If you are looking for an idyllic spot to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and commune with nature, this may be the place for you. Located in Western Maryland this state park is known for its mountain views. Just outside of Oakland and on the edge of the Youghiogheny River the park offers a quiet place to chill out and recharge. Surrounded by the Allegheny Mountains and near to the Swallow Falls with their rapids and Muddy Creek Falls and its 53-foot waterfall, this is a great place to take the family and unplug.
Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park
This famous 185-mile long waterway spent close to a century as a throughway for transporting lumber, coal, and local crops to market. Nowadays, the park is known for its biking and hiking trails, historic structures and its unbelievable view of Mather Gorge on the lower Potomac River. In addition to communing with nature, guests can explore the park via boat, bike, or on foot. Whichever way you chose for your adventure, you and your family are sure to have a good time exploring this historic park.
Brookside Gardens
Located in Montgomery County, this award-winning 50-acre display garden is part of the Wheaton Regional Park. The spot is home to a number of gardens including The Aquatic Garden, Azalea Garden, Butterfly Garden, Children’s Garden, Rose Garden, Japanese Style Garden, Trial Garden, Rain Garden and the Woodland Walk. The Formal Gardens areas include a Perennial Garden, Yew Garden, the Maple Terrace, and Fragrance Garden. Brookside Gardens also feature two conservatories for year-round enjoyment, as well as a horticultural reference library which is located in the airy Visitors Center. This is a great spot for an outing with the family or to meditate alone.
